Dear Juno or Any Other Teenager in the Same Situation,
Truthfully, I think it was incredibly careless of you to have unprotected sex without realizing how much your life could have been affected. What if you couldn’t finish high school? What would’ve happened to your social life? What if you didn’t have such loving and supportive parents? I don’t care whether you did it because you were “bored” or for whatever reason, it’s just that you two are old enough to understand the consequences that come and should’ve have taken them much more seriously.
That aside, I think you made the right decision letting the baby live and giving him up for adoption. You dealt with the weird looks and name calling yet you still went through with the pregnancy. You kept your promise to Vanessa and gave her the greatest gift she could possibly have. Despite the bumps, you didn’t make any excuses, took responsibility and handled the entire process maturely and for that, I respect you. I support a woman’s right to choose, but I do not believe such a right should be abused. Abortion should definitely be a viable option in certain cases like rape or lack of resources, but if a woman willingly gets pregnant constantly and casually aborts each and every one of them, then there’s a problem. I am pro choice, but I admire any person who has the strength to go through the process you did. However, I'm not sure I could properly say whether or not I would make the same decision you did. There is a variety of situations that could occur, but if I really needed, I would hope that I’d at least try to keep the baby before resorting to an abortion. It may just look like a clump of cells, but I believe it is still a living human being whose life should not be taken lightly and deserves to at least be considered saving.
Anyways, you made a mistake but I’m glad you did your best to work with it. I’m sure your child is happy and healthy growing up with his new mother and is very grateful to be alive. You were extremely lucky to have friends and family at your back so please don’t take your happy ending for granted. Be more careful and the next time you have a baby, make sure that it’s because you and your partner planned for it.
